Alphabet, Counting, Color, and Concept Books




     
K is for Keystone: A Pennsylvania Alphabet      
Author: Kristen Kane 
     Genre: Non-Fiction/Alphabet
    Summary: This book is all about Pennsylvania. The book takes us through the alphabet and gives us information about Pennsylvania for each letter. Example M is for Milton Hershey, it tells the reader who or what the item is and gives a more in-depth look of the item on the side of the page. The book uses a rhyming theme to help children remember what each letter stands for and why it is important.     
Characters: There are not really characters in this book; each letter is given a special thing about Pennsylvania which may include a person, place, or thing.  
Setting: The setting of this book is all over Pennsylvania. 
   Plot: Going through the alphabet and assigning each letter an important piece of information of Pennsylvania history. 
    Theme: Pennsylvania
 
On Market Street
Author: Anita and Arnold Lobel
Genre: Alphabet book
 Summary: This book is about a little girl who goes to Market Street to buy things. She ends up buying something from each letter of the alphabet! When her arms are full and the market is closing she takes the items home. She does not keep the items for herself; however she gives them to her cat. She then falls right to sleep after a long and busy day on Market Street.
Character: The main character who is a little girl and her cat
Setting: Market Street
Plot: A little girls time on Market Street and what she buys
Theme: Alphabet, Market Street

Alphabet Mystery
Author: Audrey Wood
Genre:  Nonfiction, comedy
 Summary: Letter x goes missing from Charley’s alphabet, he ran away because Charley never used him and he was tired of it! He decided to go somewhere where he could be used. So he went to the castle of capitol M and played the xylophone for him.  But all the letters ran after him because Charley really needed the letter x for his mother’s birthday cake! X got very excited but capitol M would not let them go! However after hearing it was for Charley’s mom he finally agreed to let them go and allowed them to take a treasure with them. X came back home and was so happy to be used so much for kisses on the cake!
Characters: The characters in this book are lowercase letters of the alphabet as well as Charley who is the owner of these letters, and M and I who live in the castle.
Setting: Charley’s house and the castle
 Plot: All of the lowercase letters search for the missing x who has ran away because he doesn't feel like he matters.
 Theme: Everyone matters
 

The Dangerous Alphabet

Author: Neil Gaiman
Genre: Alphabet
Summary: This book is about the alphabet but is somewhat scary. Two children and their gazelle sneak past their father and go into a world under their city. The city below is scary and although the children have a map they still encounter obstacles.  It takes you through the ABC’s but tells you all the scary things for each letter. When they get to Z their father is their waiting for them.
Characters: Boy and Girl, Gazelle, father

Plot: Two children sneaking off to a scary world
Theme: Alphabet, danger

 
 Counting kisses: a Kiss & Read Book 
Author: Karen Katz
Genre: Counting 
Summary: This book is a counting book about a family kissing their baby because she is upset because she is tired. . It starts at 10 and goes to 1. The family kisses the baby on different parts of her body to help put her to sleep. Finally the baby falls asleep and they give her one last kiss on her head. 
Setting: Families house 
Plot: The book is about a tired baby whose family kisses her to put her to bed. 
Theme:  Kisses, Counting. 

 
Goodnight Moon  
Author: Margaret Wise Brown 
Genre:  Concept Book
Summary:The book is about an old woman who is a rabbit and everything in her room. The book goes into detail about everything in the house. For example there are balloons, cows jumping over the moon, kittens with mittens, and some other things. The old lady tells everything to hush and then goes around the room saying goodnight to everything in the room and then the moon.
 Characters: Kittens, Cows, mice, old lady, Rabbit (narrator)
 Setting: Old ladies room 
Plot:  Old woman saying goodnight to everything in her room. 
Theme: Bedtime, routine 


Measuring Penny
Author: Loreen Leedy
Genre: Concept book
Summary:  This book is about a little girl named Lisa who has to do a measuring assignment for school. Her teacher tells the class that they can measure anything they would like. After school that day Lisa decided to measure her dog Penny. She needs to measure different aspects of her dog and use both standard and nonstandard measurement. She uses standard measurement such as inches and centimeters and also uses nonstandard measurement such as a dog biscuit. The readers see all of Lisa’s results in tables, charts, and graphs.

Plot: Lisa doing her measuring assignment for school.

Twelve Snails to One Lizard
Author:  Susan Hightower
Genre: Concept Book
Summary:  Milo and Bubba are trying to repair the dam before the rain comes so that the part of the river where they normally are doesn’t dry out. They use nonstandard forms of measurement to find a piece of wood big enough to repair the dam. They try to use 36 snails but they are to slow at lining up, they then try 3 lizards but they are to frisky, they also try Betty Jane but she is not interested! Bubba remembers he has a yardstick at home, the two work together to measure the right size of wood and repair the dam.

Plot: Two friends using measurement to repair the dam.

Me and the Measure of Things
Author: Joan Sweeney
Genre: Concept book
Summary:   This book is about a young girl who tells readers all about the different types of measurement she uses in her life. The book even has conversions to know how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon and various other conversions! The book has cute illustrations and will help children grasp the measurement concept.

More or Less a Mess
Author: Sheila Keenan
Genre: Concept book

Summary:   This book is about a little girl and her messy room. She tries to make it clean by putting everything into a big pile but it feel over. She then tried to sort by color but found a crazy colored shoe. Next she sorted by clothes and toys but still had stuff left on the floor. Finally she decided to make three boxes: Sell, Share, Like but she liked way to much stuff and shoved it under her bed before her mom came in the room! When the book is over there are a lot of math activities that parents or teachers can try with their students.

Plot: A little girl learning about sorting through cleaning up her room.

 Pattern Fish
Author: Trudy Harris
Genre: Concept book
Summary: This book uses poems to help teach children simple patterns. The author uses the patterns seen on a fish to help children understand patterns! Great book that allows for the reading to be very interactive! At the end of the book they have an about patterns page that allows parents and teachers to learn about the different types of patterns.

Plot: Teaching children about patterns through the use of fish.

 Max Found Two Sticks
Author: Brian Pinkney
Genre: Concept Book
Summary:  This book is about a young boy named max who finds two sticks. With these sticks he imitates that patterns that he hears in his neighborhood. This book would be wonderful to use to introduce children to sound patterns!
